A massive coastal seascape painting by Pennsylvania artist Victor Shearer, the scene captures the tumultuous coastline as the waves break against the rocks below bright blue skies. With a heavy and thick impasto that layers and builds significant texture into the surface, Shearer develops drama in the scene where the viewer can feel the water moving and the wind billowing in the sails of the distant vessels. Due to its sheer size, it immediately becomes the most eye-catching part of a room, a window-like scene that glimpses a different time and a different place.

Born in 1872, Victor Shearer spent most of his life in Reading, Pennsylvania. He was son to Christopher High Shearer, the prolific Berks County landscape artist. Prior to pursuing a career in art, Victor was a basket-maker and only began following in his father's footsteps by painting commercially around the turn of the century. There is a similarity between the work of the father and son that is remarkable, though in his later work one can see a developed energy and style that is uniquely his own. He died in Reading, Pennsylvania in 1951 and was buried at the Alsace Lutheran Cemetery. His work "Desolate Winter" is held in the permanent collection of the Reading Public Museum.
