A rich and dramatic sculpture of a Roman archer engaging the enemy from a raised position, he leans over the ledge with the bow strained and arrow prone. There is a tension in the scene from this unknown attacker and Schmidt-Hofer does a marvelous job of conveying confidence and readiness in his figure. The work is finished in its original nearly black chemical patina sealed under waxes and is signed in the naturalistic base Schmidt-Hofer. It is raised over a stepped marble base that attractively simulates the fort wall he likely defends.
