A remarkable console table both in terms of fine craftsmanship and stellar design, the thin elongated form makes it an ideal companion to a sofa in a smaller room where depth is an important consideration. The drop of the leaves provides substance and volume to the shallow depth of the profile, while also allowing it to transform into a useful table for card playing or serving guests.

The piece is crafted using solid, rather dense and finely grained Cuban Mahogany that has been brought up to a brilliant shine from careful surface preparation and polishing. A pair of wings beneath the leaves rotate out on knuckle-joints to raise them and create a firm sturdy surface.

One side has an operating drawer framed with ebony stringer and retaining a pair of original stamped brass knobs, this withdrawing smoothly to reveal a large storage space; the drawer corners show crisp hand cut dovetailing. The opposite side of the table has a faux-drawer outlined with the same ebonized stringer and knobs.

Turning the table upside down reveals the careful and tidy craftsmanship - note the large dovetail joints securing each corner, the perfect symmetry and attention to detail throughout. A stenciled "14" in yellow pigment is noted inside of the apron.

Resting over rectangular columnar supports, the sabre legs tenon into these and are locked in place with original forged steel brackets and mostly original screws. Each toe terminates in a simple capped sabot over original castors.

It remains an exquisite selection in excellent original condition.

Measurements: 27 11/16" H x 44 1/2" W x 37 7/8" D [with leaves opened]; 21 7/8" D [with leaves closed]

Condition Report: Early polished surface, refreshed over the years with a fine patina throughout. Old repairs around joint of legs into columns on both sides. Minor scuffs and abrasions as expected. No keys. Original knobs and hardware throughout.
