There is an incredible amount of detail carefully layered into this small landscape painting. A nostalgic and romantic work, it is a fine scene depicting the Dutch countryside during winter where the lakes became part of the local transit system. Neighbors greet one another as they pass by on skates and sleds, moving large loads of goods economically on this slick body of water; the surface is frozen so thick that one resident crosses with a large work horse.
Notable is the finely detailed dramatic cloud cover, suggesting a storm approaching the tower in the distance. The golden reeds of dried grasses are exquisitely detailed and the technical accuracy of the shadows and light intensity governed by the overhead clouds is admirable.
The work is unsigned and executed in oil on an apparently mahogany panel.
Measurements: 11 1/4" H x 14 1/2" W x 1 7/8" D [frame]; 7" H x 10 1/4" W [panel]
Condition Report: Under UV examination: pinprick touch ups throughout (mostly sky lower-left, building left and spots in the ice); inpainting to ice extreme lower edge center and body of the horse. The "roof" of the building on the left is perhaps an early inpaint. Contemporary frame with minor edge wear.
