A SUPERB WILLIAM IV CARVED MAHOGANY GAME TABLE
England, circa 1830
Item # 807BPG21P
This is an exceptional work of art from the second quarter of the 19th century, the bold and powerful form defined by exaggerated carving and robust claws. The quality of timbers is noteworthy, the finest selections of flamed mahogany veneers utilized in the table top, the spandrels of the game surface and arond the base - these are matched in the squared base to flow beautifully between the sides and top. The smooth curving grain flowing across the top is most pleasing, this surrounded by a spool-turned applied edge molding; the top rotates ninety-degrees to allow access to the game piece storage area. Bold reeding surrounds the pedestal. This is an exceptional acquisition for anyone passionate about very fine English antiques, particularly the bold and lively creations of the William IV period.
