ENGLISH GEORGIAN BARREL-BACK LIBRARY CHAIR, Circa early-to-mid 19th century

Item # 801BNW27P

This unusual barrel-back library arm chair is a very striking work with a certain austerity and angularity in it that is most attractive. With a gorgeous silky patina in the dense mahogany, the tapered simplicity of the legs stands in a nice contrast against the fully curved back with its more full presence. Only through careful observance of proportion was the designer of this chair able to make this form work so flawlessly; by utilizing a particularly heavy skirt and thick cushion depth, the chair operates in a perfect balance of thirds: A third is squared and angular in the legs through cushion, two-thirds are curvy and dramatic. The fabric is not old and remains servicable, being clean and in good repair throughout other than a few bleached spots. Sturdy, strong and unusually comfortable, this is an eye-catching chair that was built to last the test of time.

Measurements: 27” W x 25 1/2” D x 43 5/8” H, 17 1/2” H to seat

Condition Report: The fabric is in estate-condition, still overall “good” with spots of discoloration; deeply stuffed and very comfortable. Old crack to wood in proper right front leg at the top. Casters removed from the back feet and the front castors are old replacements. Original blocking in the back legs, front corners with new corner blocking that dovetails into the front and side rails; upper edge of the front rail spliced with new wood from repeated reupholstery. Cambric removed from beneath the seat in order to examine interior, but we can have new cambric fabric installed if you plan to keep the current upholstery. We have not examined the structure underneath the fabric for repairs/etc.
