“FILEUSE ET SON ENFANT” TORCHIERE BRONZE SCULPTURE BY EMILE PEYNOT, Signed E. Peynot Rome 1881

Item # 612PZC19D

A very large work that captures the attention of the viewer immediately, this is a piece that was intended for display in the corner on a large pedestal, allowing the lamp to bring highlight to the sculpture and not to actually illuminate the room. It was sculpted in two versions and several sizes, this being the largest edition to come to the market in several years; including the globe, it measures a full 38” in height. More common variations of this sculpture feature the mother raising a spool of rough wool in the air while the lower hand spins wool over her sleeping baby; another version has the baby awake and reaching for the thread spanning between the wool and spindle. This version is identical to the former, but the foundry cast it to include the gorgeous torchiere and frosted glass shade and the lower hand clasps what could perhaps be a baby’s rattle. She looks on her little one with total peace, not wishing to disturb his slumber. The casting quality and complexity is noteworthy - this work is crafted of at least twelve parts in the lost-wax method. The group is finished in a gorgeous reddish-brown patina with wonderful surface variation, overall remaining in exquisite condition. It is beautifully preserved, sealed and polished in the shop and ready for immediate presentation in the home.

Emilé Edmond Peynot studied under Joffrey and Robinet, first exhibiting at the Salon des Artistes Fraçais 1873, later achieving the Grand Prix de Rome in 1880 and gold medals at the Paris Expositions Universelles in 1889 and 1900. His work is held by museums in Paris and his public commissions for public squares and monuments in Paris at the Petit Palais, the Opera-Comique, and the Lyon train station are lasting preservations of his achievements.
