LOUISE ALLEN HOBBS (AMERICAN, D. 1953) BRONZE SCULPTURE "WATER CARRIER" C. 1914, Cast by Gorham Founders Co., in original black patina; marked LOUISE ALLEN HOBBS MCM XIV and Gorham Founders OYX verso

Item # 611JGP07A

A most striking work from the first quarter of the 20th century, the sculpture captures the exotic spirit of the Art Deco movement with an unnatural angularity and stark simplicity, an elimination of all unnecessary elements. The seated figure is sober with a sense of strength in her features despite the seemingly humble circumstances - a pair of large water jugs are hoisted in the crook of her arms while wearing only a thin draped towel for cover. She sits with dignity of posture with her eyes are closed and her palms are raised slightly toward the sky. It is a powerful piece that is simple in form but rather complex as a subject. Works by Louise Allen Hobbs are quite rare and generally are cast by Gorham Founders. She was born in Lowell, Massachusetts, she studied at the Rhode Island School of Design in Providence and the School of Boston Museum of Fine Arts. While completing this work she lived at 9 Copley Studios, Boston, Massachusetts.
