RARE DIMINUTIVE GEORGE III ROSEWOOD AND SATINWOOD-INLAID OVULAR PEMBROKE TABLE OF THE SHERATON PERIOD
England, circa 1795
Item # 403LRB02A
A fine and rare George III drop-leaf pembroke table of the Sheraton Period, this example is characterized by being unusually diminutive and leggy. Executed with rosewood veneers accentuated by satinwood inlays, it features an ovular form when the leaves are raised and wings withdrawn to support them. A single drawer is situated in the apron with an original stamped brass knob and key, the opposite side a faux drawer with an inoperable keyhole and no knob. The table has not been available on the market since it was acquired by an antique dealer in the United States from the firm of Richard Courtney Limited in London in 1999 for $ 6,800 USD (original sale invoice included with the table for provenance records). Raised on tapered legs terminating in squared brass castors. An exceedingly elegant example that views well from every angle.
Measurements: 28 1/2" H x 17 1/8" D x 23 7/8" W
Condition Report:
Good early surface, not original but rather old with later refreshing; top with discolorations, most notably along the two shrinkage cracks along the top; several scars/ink stains on the top; light scuffs and scratches throughout, now having joined the surface as part of the patina under later applications of wax; legs have some shrinkage that creates a subtle out-of-squareness; repairs at the joint of the legs with the apron in a few areas, along with associated veneer repairs at the corners; a black wash was applied to the underside of the table in the mid-19th century; original pulls and key; original castors; spliced repair to the left side of the drawer in the top dovetail; a very fine presentation, ready to place.
