FRENCH ROCOCO STYLE PARCEL-GILTWOOD PAINTED TRUMEAU MIRROR
Retaining the original oil painting in the upper over early smoky glass | probably France, circa late 19th century
Item # 403KIX18P
This refined antique mirror has a substantial profile and is divided onto a one-third display of an oil on canvas painting, reserving the remaining two-thirds for a wonderful smoky aged glass mirror. Both are framed by intricately carved giltwood elements in the distinctive Rococo taste, the flourishes of rocaille curves and foliage flowing naturalistically around both decorative elements. The giltwood is really quite special, being crisply executed and having a wonderful patina throughout. The mirror's body is painted in an old muted gray hue, the low saturation of which contrasts brilliantly against the gilded accents.
The painting depicts an idyllic pastoral scene depicting two courting couples with a cupid figure between them in a lush garden setting.
The glass is quite old but was likely replaced in the 20th century; it possesses a smoky and delightful patina that is positively magnetic.
An absolute statement piece, imposing and commanding both in terms of scale and the wonderful giltwood work throughout.
Measurements: 86 1/4" H x 48" W x 2 5/8" D
Condition Report:
Painting in the upper portion is dirty with a grime layer on the varnish - it would benefit from being cleaned and stretched. It has not been examined for restoration or removed from the frame. Light craquelure throughout. Glass is probably replaced, this with extensive silvering loss and an overall smoky patina. Chipping and loss to the giltwood throughout. Cracks in the joints beneath the paint throughout. Paint flaking and chipped in many areas, extensively worn and discolored. Mounting hardware on the back will have to be examined based on your use case - the current hardware is sufficient for anchoring the mirror if it is placed on the floor or on a console/chest - if you are mounting it for floating presentation, stronger and more heavy duty hardware would be required (for example, french cleats).
