This powerful carved oak buffet is a true statement piece. With a massive length of 101 inches, it is an absolute strikepoint piece. Crafted beautifully out of solid golden oak, the drawers are hand-dovetailed in the typical manner and the facade is beautifully embellished with applied carvings. It is unmarked and likely circa the 1890s with a rich patina and lovely form.
The delightfully worn and faded top is molded around the edge, projecting in the center just slightly to conform to the outward curve of the body housing the stack of four equal drawers. Two drawers are fitted with compartments for organization while the other two are large open spaces for storage.
Flanking the drawers on either side are two-door cabinets that open to reveal an adjustable shelved interior. The buffet rests over small cabriole legs.
Forms with this kind of presence, exquisite quality and fine condition are quite difficult to find. Crafted to stand the test of time, this incredibly well-built buffet is young in life despite well over a century of life. It is an easy piece to live with as it is not delicate - it is intended to be actively used with a surface that grows more attractive from the light wear, rubbing and waxing that will happen over the century to come.
Measurements: 101" W x 23 3/4" D x 40 5/8" H
Condition Report: Minor stains to top, fading/discolorations to finish, an overall very nice surface patina. Wear, abrasions and minor losses as expected from light use - for example, some minor wear/chipping to edges of feet, a gouge at the back corner of the molding around the top. A key is included but it does not operate the locks.
