Lovely color etching of Bruges, Belgium by artist Hans Figura. an Austrian painter and printmaker, best known for his intricate aquatint etchings of European landscapes and cityscapes. Born on January 22, 1898 in Nagy-Kikinda, Hungary to Austrian parents, Figura went on to study at the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna. From 1923-28, he made numerous art study trips throughout Europe including Germany, Italy, France, Belgium, Holland, England, Czechoslovakia and Hungary. His first major success came in 1924, when he won acclaim for his etchings exhibited in Italy and the United States. In 1929, he visited the United States and in 1930, he traveled back to France, Holland and Switzerland. During this time he maintained studios in both New York City and Vienna, Austria. A prolific artist, he created over 850 etchings and is widely collected. This image seems to be one of the rarer subjects. It's housed in an appropriate vintage frame with subtle gilt decoration & with mat having hand drawn French line decoration. This etching was probably framed in the 1930's or 40s with the mat replaced in the 1950s. Overall size is 19" by 15.5" with the image measuring approx 12" by 8.5". The cut edge of the mat shows toning but hasn't bled onto the print. The print appears to be in excellent condition but has not been examined out of the frame and is sold as shown.
