Rare large 19th century 4 liter etched pottery master stein #1013 made by Reinhold Hanke (firm active 1868-1938) In 1875, the factory was visited by Kaiserin Augusta, wife of Kaiser Wilhelm I. Recognition and honors soon followed and the firm was appointed Supplier to the Royal Court of Augusta, German Empress and Queen of Prussia, 1n 1876. This stein is shown in a circa 1885 company catalog. The decoration features (from top to bottom): a cherub playing a musical instruments; a ring of angels representing the arts; the broad, highly detailed etched scene of merrymakers; and a pair of drunken knaves. The stein is 16" tall and 5.5" at the widest diameter. It's in excellent condition: no cracks, stains, or losses. There's a tiny chip to the ring of raised dots above the dancing couple as shown above. The pewter lid is dented near the thumblift resulting in the finial being out of plumb. Overall very nice condition.
