Rare and unusual print of the Emancipation Proclamation with a large image of Lincoln and a surrounding ring of portraits of the Union generals. No citation of publisher or engraver. In its original walnut frame with replaced mat and backing. On the back of the frame is a partial label from R. B. Appleby of Chicago, a frame manufacturer and maker of photographic supplies including albumen paper. (Reported in the Penn Yan Democrat¸ published in Penn-Yan, New York on August 24, 1852: "The partnership of Richard B. Appleby & S. Wood from Rochester, New York are in Penn Yan making daguerreotypes and selling frames, cases, and gold lockets." The advertisement ran for four weeks from August 24 to September 14, 1852. Later ads show R.B. Appleby in business at 134 S. Clark St. in Chicago) The print itself is a photograph of an engraving on thin glossy photographic paper mounted on cardboard. Appleby being an early photographer may have produced this print himself. The back of the cardboard showing staining from the original wooden frame backing. Overall framed size is 25" by 21.25". The oval opening is 18" by 14". The image showing some light toning (not visible with the new mat) but is otherwise in perfect condition. The frame showing wear commensurate with its age. This is a very rare printing of the Proclamation. I was unable to locate another copy. Guaranteed to be a period original from the second half of the 19th century.
