Glazed stoneware pedestal vase by Chicago Studio Potter William Hoffman (1920-2011), a respected artist, and professor of ceramics and sculpture at the Art Institute of Chicago and Loyola University.. This piece was from Mr. Hoffman's own collection and was purchased from his estate. Born in Roswell New Mexico, he studied at the Art Institute of Chicago and at Alfred University, New York. He began making pottery at the Art Institute in 1949 and by the late 1960s his art pottery transformed into abstract sculptures using bits and pieces from discarded pots and earthenware. The book "The Chicago Art Review" (1989 by Les Krantz) pictures one of his sculptures on page 201. He also had showed at a three person art pottery exhibition at the Art Institute in 1965 and exhibited at the Primitive Art Society in the 1980s. His listing from "Who Is Who In American Art" (1992-3 ed.) is shown above and lists many of his exhibitions. This bowl covered in a deep chocolate brown gloss glaze with unglazed foot, dates from 1961 and is also marked Not For Sale along with his incised signature. It measures 7" across the top and stands 2 3/4" high. In fine original condition.
