Amusing old majolica match holder / striker / ashtray portrays a well dressed Victorian man singing and holding a songbook or hymnal. A neighboring barrel holds the matches and the tray at his feet is adorned with an Art Nouveau flower. The ribbed striking surface is on the side of the base. Marked with an impressed underglaze number 7284 and with additional impressed 91 on the bottom along with what are probably the decorators mark. Probably of German or Austrian origin. 5" tall, base measures 4" by 3 1/2". In near mint condition with just a small diamond shaped glaze chip to the edge of the book (an easy touch-up if desired) o/w free of damage & crazing. Probably dates to the 1890s.
