Very scarce original poster for the march 1895 issue of Harper's magazine by important American artist Edward Penfield (1866-1925). The image of a woman in wind with March hare and issue of Harper's blown away. Five-color lithograph: grey, light green, yellow, red and blue. Published by Harper & Brothers, in Feb 1895. Signed bottom right: EDWARD PENFIELD. 13 3/4" w. x 19 3/8" h. Penfield was a leading American illustrator in the era known as the "Golden Age of American Illustration" and he is considered the father of the American poster. His work has been included in almost every major book on American Illustration or the history of the poster. He is also a major figure in the evolution of graphic design. Penfield served the Harpers in varying capacities — staff illustrator, art editor, art director — from 1890 to 1901. Condition: Old penciled numbers near the bottom of the woman's dress o/w excellent condition.
