Original rare Charles Magnus "Rose Of Washington" Patriotic Cover with folded die-cut insert. The insert which can be folded to fit the envelope features a color image of roses and leaves on two of the eight folded sections on front; city views of Chicago, Milwaukee, Detroit, St. Louis, Cincinnati, & Louisville, over a ring of circular views of important Chicago buildings with captions across remaining six folded sections on front. The legend "Our Land of Liberty one and Inseparable / NO NORTH, NO SOUTH, NO EAST, NO WEST/ Published by Chas. Magnus, 12 Frankfort St N.Y." is in the center of the back surrounded by bird's eye views of Pittsburgh, Philadelphia, New York, Albany, Boston, Portland, Buffalo, & Washington, over a ring showing an important building from each city, or in the case of Portland a view of Providence and Buffalo Niagara Falls. Printed in the characteristic bronze ink used by Magnus. Charles Magnus (1826 – 1900) was a printing entrepreneur, whose business was based in New York City. Known for his color lithographs of city views, song sheets, maps and patriotic illustrations for stationery and postal covers. During the Civil War, Magnus produced around 700 patriotic envelopes and over 300 illustrated song sheets. He used images of allegorical figures, battle scenes, political cartoons, portraits and state emblems, frequently using the same images in different combinations. This "Rose of Washington" is a rare variant with views of Chicago & other cities replacing the more commonly founded one with views of Washington on the front & back. Condition of the insert is very fine, virtually as new. The cover, which is considered the most sought after of the Magnus patriotics is near fine, clean, complete with bright unfaded colors in unposted condition. An example of this cover is shown at the top of the Charles Magnus Wikipedia page. Size when open is 10.5" diameter.
