Shadow box double framed oval porcelain plaque with what appears to be a photographic portrait of a bearded man reproduced on the porcelain. The subject must have been prosperous as this technique is rarely seen and the piece is most likely totally unique. The likeness appears quite lifelike and doesn't look like an engraving. This may have been an experimental process at the time. The plaque bears the impressed mark used by the German firm of C. M. Hutchenreuther from 1857 to 1899 on the back. The inner gilt frame and outer black wood shadowbox frame are original to the piece, and appear to have never been opened. The inner gilt frame in near mint condition, the outer frame shows surface wear to the paint. The interior of the shadowbox is lined with burgundy velvet. It also bears a St. Louis, MO framer's label. The oval plaque measures 6 3/4" by 5 1/4"; the outer frame is 12" by 10 3/4" by 2 1/4" deep.
