Large original abstract brutalist bronze entitled "Weiblich" (Female) by Swiss sculptor Guiliano Pedretti (1924-2012). This bronze is signed by the artist and numbered 3 from an edition of 5 produced in 1969. There's also a small rectangular foundry mark. It retains the original greenish brown patina. It stands 24" tall and weighs approx 25 lbs. This sculpture is pictured on page 5 of "Guiliano Pedretti" by Rene' Terrier. A copy of this publication is included forr the buyer with the sculpture. Pedretti studied in 1942-1943 at the Zurich School of Design with Ernst Gubler. In 1943 he met Alberto Giacometti who became a major influence on Pedretti and who encouraged him to continue with his sculpting. In 1949 he became a fellow of the Swiss Institute in Rome. In 1951, an avalanche destroyed most of his early works. He started a new studio a year later and later traveled extensively & was a frequent visitor at Giacometti's Paris studio. His works can be found in the Kunstmuseum Bern and the Bündner Kunstmuseum Chur, and many of his works can be viewed at his former studio, now the Pedretti Museum in Celerina, Switzerland. He's listed in the Dictionary of Contemporary Swiss Artists published by Verlag Huber in 1981. In 2012, one of his bronzes sold for over 4000 euros at Christies. There was a major retrospective exhibition of his sculptures in 2013 at Galleria il Teroso in Zurich. There have been 3 monographs published on this artist: 2004 by Ulrich Suter; n.d. by Norbert du Carrois; & 2009 by Bernhard von Waldkirch & Ulrich Suter. The statue is in very fine, original condition. His works come up rarely and this is an excellent example of his 1960s style.
