Fabulous Art Pottery console set by noted California pottery Brayton Laguna Beach. The set consists of a pair of very charming stylized pheasants, one with head up, the other with slightly lowered head, and a lavish free form console bowl. All are covered with a velvety tangerine matte glaze with painted and airbrushed added brown details. The huge bowl is 20" long and the taller pheasant is 8.5" tall. The 2 birds are marked "Brayton's Laguna Beach Cal." One bird is numbered 41-50. The console bowl has no factory mark but all 3 pieces bear the hand painted decorator's mark "MD". Brayton was founded in 1927. Because of the company's reputation for quality figurines, it was the first pottery licensed by Walt Disney Studios to produce figures of their animated characters in the 1930s. The popularity of Brayton spawned a pottery explosion in the art colony of Laguna with over a dozen in the area by 1941 growing to 65 during the war years. After the war imports hurt the American potteries financially and Brayton finally succumbed in 1968. This set probably dates to the 1940s or 50s. Today Brayton is widely admired for its innovation, excellence in both design and production, and ranks among the finest and most desirable California potteries of the period. Condition is very fine with no wear, damage or repairs.
