Unique hand crafted Folk Art Ballot Box probably from a lodge or union hall. Signed inside the top opening and in the hidden compartment under the drawer: Math. Kolle 1875. Handmade of oak, pine & walnut with added found elements, the whole piece has a crusty old finish with quite a bit of 'alligatoring' to the surface. The drawer retains its original lock which appears to be in fine, untouched condition, with hand carved keyhole surround. (no key). The piece appears to be all original. This large box stands 13.75" tall and the base measures 11.75" by 10.25". Condition is excellent: there's chips to 2 corners on the lid and the points of both added decorations at the front corners are lost down to the first nail head. There are minor wear spots to the surface as you would expect on a 140 year old piece and finish is off on the oak base and ledge on the back side, but overall the appearance is all that you could hope for. Could also be used as a humidor or jewelry box.
