Mint condition early Royal Doulton Figure HN 550 "Polly Peachum" from the Beggar's Opera series. Designed by Leslie Harradine. Issued 1922-1949. Measures 6.5in (16.5cm) in height.
This figure with the hand written marks as shown. The Beggar's Opera , written by John Gay, was first performed in 1728. It concerns the escapades of a lighthearted highwayman, Captain MacHeath, who falls in love with both Polly Peachum and Lucy Lockett, one the daughter of an innkeeper, the other of the warden of Newgate prison. The opera was revived at the Lyric Hammersmith, in 1920, a production designed by Claud Lovatt Fraser (1890-1921), that created the interest that caused Doulton to produce this series. The five characters in the Doulton's Beggar's Opera Collection are Polly Peachum, Captain MacHeath, Lucy Lockett, The Highwayman (a member of the MacHeath gang) and The Beggar.
