This listing is for a HARD TO FIND Eckhardt & Engler character stein / beer stein / beer mug / figural stein.
I believe this character is a Hunter with a rifle and pipe.
It is marked on the base. I darkened that photo a little so that the markings show up. It is also marked - West Germany.
Eckhardt and Engler was established in 1898 in Höhr, Germany. About 1918, they purchased some of Rosskopf & Gerz’s molds and starting producing the steins themselves. By 1923, Eckhardt & Engler purchased the balance of the Rosskopf & Gerz molds. Eckhardt & Engler lasted into the 1950s when they sold their molds to Werner Corzelius.
Production was severely limited during the years between the Depression and World War II. So finding those steins has become a difficult task. Eckhardt & Engler only used cream stoneware in manufacturing their character steins. They were also hand-painted. Very few of them came with a pewter lid or a pewter lid raiser. These are hard to find. Each character stein was assigned a mold number. Eckhardt & Engler did not always mark their stein bases. This mark resembles double E's back-to-back over an H. This is also hard to find.
It will be hard to find another one like this.
Beautifully hand painted.
Measures 8 1/6" tall and is 5 1/2" wide including the handle.
Dates circa 1950.
It is in excellent vintage condition. Hinge works. Lid sits correctly. Inside is clean. Any white in the photos is from my camera flash. Remember that you are looking at a 66 year old item that was used. Ask all needed questions before purchase.
