This listing is for very early cut glass decanter tantalus set - wine bottle caddy. Each decanter has been hand blown, wheel cut, engraved and hand polished. Each base has a double mitered star. Exceptional stoppers are hollow. The pattern on the neck is gorgeous. Two decanters are engraved and cut and one decanters is engraved, cut and frosted.

The caddy / tantalus is silverplated and was made by Reed & Barton. It dates circa 1880. All markings are shown in my photo.

One of the most misunderstood aspects of glass is the difference between etched, cut, and engraved patterns. Simply put, etching is a process using acid to essentially bubble up the surface of the glass to make a pattern. The two main types are plate etching and needle etching. The primary difference between them is that engraving is a physical process and etching is a chemical process. An engraver uses sharp tools to cut lines directly into a surface. Engraving is a much more expensive process.

The two engraved decanters measure approx. 11 1/3" tall and 4" wide. The frosted decanter measures approx. 10 1/2" tall and 3 3/4" wide. The total set weighs approx. 7 1/2 lbs.

The glass is a clear color. They are in excellent antique condition. There are a few tiny flea bites here and there. Any white in the photos is from my camera flash. As with all antique glass, you will see signs of use. Please examine the photos very carefully to add to my description. Ask all needed questions before purchase.
