This listing is for a signed talio chrome print by Lionel Barrymore on gold foil. It is titled "Old Red Bank". The original etching was done in 1938. This print dates from the 1960's. This print came from the estate of Sylvia and Leon Gerst. They created the Gerst Foundation to help children with reading concerns. Throughout their lives they were avid supporters of the Arts. They were also artists themselves creating beautiful metal sculptures.
It is VERY RARE to find one of these prints where the foil has not faded. Most of the ones you see for sale have faded to white or pale yellow.
This art form is called a Talio Chrome. Talio-chrome is a gravure printing process, gravure being an intaglio printing method, hence the name: talio/taglio (the "g" is silent). I think talio chrome is the antiquary equivalent of the more modern method of steel facing wherein a copper plate etching is faced with steel post production to ensure a longer printing life.
Lionel Barrymore is best known as an Oscar-winning actor and director. But, he was also an accomplished artist. Barrymore studied painting in Paris from 1903-07. Throughout his life, he produced paintings and etchings. Today, his artwork is sought by collectors.
Barrymore would sign his original prints after they had been made. Etchings are done using a process where the artist uses a sharp needle and scratches into a metal plate to make the design. The scratches are then filled with ink and a piece of paper is then pressed against the plate and the ink transfers to the paper. This can be done multiple times, with each impression being an original print. Because the plate does deteriorate with each impression, etchings are rarely done in editions exceeding several hundreds and often far fewer, perhaps as few as a dozen. Note that the printed image is the reverse of the plate, so any signature or title would be backwards if it was made on the plate, unless the artist were to write it backwards, not a likely process. Most likely, any title or signature is done after the image is printed and done separately for each print. So if you have an "original" etching, you would have one of the original impressions made from the plate. It is important to recognize that these are considered original works of art even though more than one was “printed”.
