Three hundred years ago, wealthy young men and women from England began taking trips "tours" through Europe in search of learning through the exposure to art, museums, European culture, new composers, and the roots of Western civilization. This custom was considered one of the best ways to help them develop their mind and expand their knowledge of the world. This trip was called a "Grand Tour". This extended trip served as an educational rite of passage. Though the Grand Tour was primarily associated with the British nobility, similar trips were made by young men and women of Northern European nations, and from the second half of the 18th century North Americans began sending their children. The Grand Tour offered a liberal education, and the opportunity to acquire things otherwise unavailable, They would return home with crates full of books, works of art, scientific instruments, and cultural souvenirs. This item for sale is an example of one of those souvenirs.
