One of the most misunderstood aspects of glass is the difference between etched, cut, and engraved patterns. Simply put, etching is a process using acid to essentially bubble up the surface of the glass to make a pattern. The two main types are plate etching and needle etching. The primary difference between them is that engraving is a physical process and etching is a chemical process. An engraver uses sharp tools to cut lines directly into a surface. Engraving is a much more expensive process. One well known example of engraved glass it Hawkes Gravic.
Decanter measures 12 1/8" tall and 4 1/8" wide. The height of 12 1/8" tall includes the stopper. The stopper itself measures 5 1/2" tall. Each glass measures 5 1/2" tall and 2 5/8" wide.
