This listing is for an antique Port Wine Caddy with two FOUR ringed decanters. Caddy is silver plate and decanters are cut glass.
Date 1831-1855 - Victorian Period
THIS RARE SET IS EXCEPTIONAL!!!
Referred to as a Port Wine Caddy and also a Double Wine Bottle Holder.
A four ring decanter is extremely rare. It had to have been a special order. The three ring decanter was designed to fit your three fingers around when lifting the bottle.
The port wine caddy was made by Thomas Bradbury & Son. The markings on the base date it between 1831-1855. The markings are T B & S EP. At the end of 1855 another son joined the business and then it was known as Thomas Bradbury & Sons. Then the markings changed to T B & S S EP. The firm was in Sheffield England with a showroom in London. It was made using the oldest form of silver plating which was to fuse the silver over copper. You can see the copper showing through on this caddy.
The two slender cut glass decanters are outstanding. They are Anglo - English, Irish. They are cut from top to bottom. I have made a few notes on the photos of the decanters so that some of their best features are not missed. FIRST THEY ARE FOUR RINGED DECANTERS NOT THREE RINGS. Each ring was cut in a diamond pattern. Below the fourth ring you can see a ring of oval pontils around the shoulder of the bottle. Below the pontils is a row of fine fluting. Mushroom stopper. Base is cut in a star pattern. There is just too much to describe.
A brief chronology of their slversmith business is:
Fenton, Creswick & Watson c.1773
Creswick, Watson & Oakes c.1789-1795
Watson, Fenton & Thomas Bradbury I c. 1795-1831
Thomas Bradbury I & Son c.1831-1855
Thomas Bradbury II & Sons c1855 -1905
Thomas Bradbury III & Sons c 1905 -1943
The caddy measures 8 1/4" long, 3 1/4" wide, 3 1/4" tall to the top rim of the caddy and approx 10" tall to the top of the handle. It weighs two pounds. Great condition. Wear to the silver plate. No dents. Beautiful fine detailing.
Each decanter measures 8" tall and 2 7/8" wide. They were hand blown, wheel cut and hand polished. Many cuts are double mitered. There is some wear on the base. No repairs, cracks or chips. Remarkable condition for their age. A few very very tiny pin pricks. Just two stunning masterpieces.
