With its amoeboid form set with a juicy garnet cabochon, this silver ring is unmistakably by modernist great Sam Kramer. Kramer referred to his own work as "Fantastic Jewelry for People Who are Slightly Mad". The surrealist art that inspired Kramer can be seen in this ring with its echoes of Jean Arp, and is a very wearable expression of that artistic tradition.
According to Toni Greenbaum in "Messengers of Modernism", Sam Kramer (1913-1964) was "arguably the most significant Modernist jeweler in the United States...No jeweler expressed the anarchist attitude of the Beat Generation with more aplomb than Kramer." Quoting Modernist Jeweler Ed Wiener in the book, "For those of us who work in the new jewelry tradition, Sam Kramer was the legend. An image shatterer, he demolishes conformity with a savage surrealism".
