A veil of sheer glistening purple washes across the face of this large boulder opal stick pin. Opal is formed is cracks is host rocks (aka the "boulder") and in this case forms a thin layer across the top of the host stone. As light strikes the stone, the flashes of purple appear over approximately 1/3 of the stone. The design is simple and clearly intended to highlight the beauty of the stone. This piece was artist made of gilt silver. The finish on the gilt silver is a lovely satin finish.
SIZE: 2-1/4" long. The stone is 7/8" wide x 13/16" high
MARKS: "sterling" and a maker's marks that is partially obscured by to attachment of the pin and reads "Eve F___nce"
AGE: mid-20th century
CONDITION: excellent vintage condition with minimal signs of wear. It is possible that the maker of this piece put a clear coat of resin over the top, but I can't be certain without destructive testing.
