Beautiful Bronzed Art Nouveau / Art Deco Set Of Butterfly Girl Fairy Bookends C. 1922
From a recent estate sale we present this beautiful vintage heirloom bronzed cast metal Art Nouveau or Art Deco Water Nymph or Fairy set of bookends known as "Butterfly Girl." Un-Signed. Attributed to Ronson. Stamped "63" to lower verso. C 1920-1925.
This is a great heirloom set of extremely rare "Egyptian Revival" inspired bookends highly sought after in collector circles. A wonderful fine set of bronzed Butterfly Girls in their traditional kneeling pose with their wings spread open. Great artistic detail and presence in this amazing set from the sculptor known only as "X-1" to the art world.
This wonderful set of bookends were inspired by a striking female image on the February 2, 1922 LIFE Magazine cover created by the illustrator Frank Xavier Leyendecker (1877-1924). The cover was labeled The Flapper and bore the date of 1922. The title and the date suggest an Art Deco image, but Mr. Leyendecker gave us an Art Nouveau image instead. The date of 1922 was very early in the Flapper era. Flappers, the bohemian young ladies of the nineteen twenties, became associated with low-waisted dresses and the Bob hair style, but not with wings. The Flapper cover displays a winged lady and a clinging, diaphanous dress, replicated in the bookends with the addition of whiplash curves in the wings, all iconic Art Nouveau features.
Simply an excellent presentation in a great example of Art Nouveau and Art Deco era theme of Fairies in heavy Egyptian Revival influence. This is a great extremely rare set of collector bookends in very nice condition and are heavy at 12 lbs packaged.
This great set will display magnificently regardless of where you choose to display them. They would look wonderful in any Art Nouveau, Art Deco, French or European style décor. They would also be a fantastic addition to any sculpture or Art Nouveau / Art Deco collection.
Height: 6 ½ inches Width: 7 inches Depth: 3 ¾ inches Condition: Very Good – Only very minor use and wear indicators and possible casting line flaw and slightly bump on end of one nose - commensurable with their age.
