Huge Extremely Rare Vintage Chicago Architectural Bust of a Satyr by Leon Hermant C. 1924
From a private estate sale in Chicago we are pleased to present this wonderful large extremely rare life-sized plaster bust of a "SATYR" by the renowned French / American sculptor Leon Hermant (1866-1936) from Chicago. Signed LEON HERMANT to bust lower left side. Dated 1924. C. 1924
A gorgeous extremely rare large French / American commissioned bust of a Greek Satyr in grand Leon Hermant fashion and in wonderful artistic detail and deep life size sculpting. This is a serious one of a kind collector piece that illustrates first hand Hermant's artistic skills in depictions of Classical and Mythological figures! This is the first bust sculpture by Hermant that we have ever come across available for public offering. We could not locate a similar sculpture by Hermant anywhere.
If you are familiar with Leon Hermant then you know he was a French-American sculptor best known for his architectural sculpture. Hermant was born in France, educated in Europe and came to America in 1904 to work on the French Pavilion at the Louisiana Purchase Exposition in St. Louis, Missouri. Prior to his arrival in America Hermant had submitted sculptures for the 1893 Chicago World's Fair for exhibition and the response was very welcoming and likely attributed to his arrival in America in 1904. For most of his career he was based in Chicago, working mostly in the American midwest, and frequently with a partner Carl (Charles) Beil. From 1904, when they met in St. Louis, until 1927 when Beil died. Leon Hermant and Carl Beil were partners at their Sculpture Studio at 21 East Pearson Street in Chicago. In 1928 Hermant was awarded the Légion d'honneur by the French government for his Louis Pasteur Monument in Grant Park, Chicago.
Bust such this – are almost impossible to come across since most of Hermant's work was vested in deep relief decorative architectural panels.
Again, this is the very first Hermant bust we have ever come across. A wonderful depiction of a Satyr like only Hermant could provide. This is a rare and beautiful piece that will simply showcase regardless of where you choose to display him due to his artistic beauty and large size. He would look wonderful in any Edwardian, Victorian, Art Nouveau, French, Early American or Classical style décor. He will be a wonderful addition to any statue, Classical sculpture or Satyr art collection. In great condition – largely due to belonging to a estate private collection. Wonderful aged patina. A great serious collector piece by this Chicago sculptor of international aclaim!
