This is a wonderful regional traditional silver engagement ring from the Vendee area of France. Originally a symbol of faith it evolved to become a symbol of love and availability. It was said to have different meanings depending how it was worn.
If you wore it on your right hand, the crown inwards, you mean that your heart is free. The crown outwards, you signify to the chosen one of your heart that you are free and that love is possible .
Worn in the left hand, the crown outwards, your love has been given to another and you are no longer available, literally engaged to be married.
Although more than 100 years old the ring has no wear at all, just a slight dark patina from the passing of the years. It is hallmarked with the French crab mark and a makers mark. It measures a size 7 . The head of the ring measures 1/2 inch north to south.
