Up for sale is a lovely very old pair of shoes. These shoes were worn by women and children whose feet were bound and the tinier the better. My understanding is they are called lotus shoes because the foot would resemble a lotus flower when bound up tightly and it was considered beautiful. By tradition, every stitch in the fine old silk shoes is to be done by hand, by the child who will wear them. This is an ancient tradition that was finally banned in the early 1900s. This pair is about 5" long and they were worn. The nails in the soles have caused some rust stains on the soles/heels. These were worn so there is fraying and wear as shown. The silk design is a pretty butterfly or moth.
