Fabulous Rare Victorian The Maccabees Astra Castra Numen Lumen Metal Porcelain Vintage Hanging Medal Badge.
Signed twice on top and bottom pieces Whitehead & Hoag Co. Newark, NJ.
A wonderful hanging medal badge pin with a C Clasp dating from the late 1800s.
The top says Astra Castra Numen Lumen.
Done in what I believe is bronze or brass metal, it has a nice patina which I will leave as is.
The bottom has a round Porcelain painted circle of a building that looks like a castle but most likely The Maccabees original building headquarters.
The Knights of the Maccabees was a fraternal organization formed in 1878 in London, Ontario, Canada. In the society's early years it provided final-expense related benefits such as society cemeteries.
The motto of the Knights of Maccabees was the Latin phrase "Astra Castra Numen Lumen" which means "The stars my camp, the Deity my light."
This badge measures approximately 4" x 2 1/8".
