A rare pair of Basil Matthews Cheetahs. They are individually modelled, hand painted and signed by him each is 3.25"h. by 2 1/8"w. by 1 3/8"d., circa 1960's. These beautiful cats with their soulful eyes are sporting jeweled collars. There is some surface paint lifting. I'm not sure that they are production flaws as Matthews had invented a new ceramic process in his studio.
Born in Wales, Basil Matthews was a self-taught, talented artist who was known for his equestrian and lovable little animal caricature sculptures with their expressive eyes and faces. Each of his delightful pieces was hand-sculpted and hand-painted as he was opposed to mass producing his creations which were kept down to limited editions. He was a fellow of the Royal Society of Arts, The Society of Design and The Society of Industrial Artists and Designers. Matthews opened his studio in the late 1940's and produced his works until his death in 1985.
