Here is a gorgeous antique Victorian era serpent brooch which includes a folded bail to wear on a chain or necklace. This exquisite pin is in fabulous condition. It represents eternal love, a popular Victorian motif.
Made of 18kt yellow gold, there is a beautiful cobalt blue enameling over the body of the serpent coiled in a figure 8 design. The head at the top is designed in great detail and is accented by a lovely rose cut diamond melee. The back of the pin has a single pin stem and trombone closure in excellent working condition. These type of closure patents became available starting 1850. You will find the mark for 18kt on the barrel of the trombone clasp (it is worn away to show the partial mark.) Purchased from a reputable auction house, it has been tested positive for 18kt gold. Total gram weight is 10.6.
Measurement is 1-5/16 x 2 inches. The rose cut diamond is white and eye clean, measuring approximately 3mm by 3.5mm (it could be larger but it is set deeply and this is an approximate measurement). It is set and open in the back which allows the light in for a wonderful sparkling result. Overall condition is very good. The enamel is in almost excellent shape with very minor wear.
