This lovely cultured pearl and diamond necklace is in the lavalier style and I believe was made by renown pearl jewelry company American Pearl Company, circa 1950's. The American Pearl Company was founded in 1950 and still operates today. They are considered a premier pearl and jewelry company and their classic jewelry designs are sought after for their exquisite quality. This necklace has a makers mark of a single capital letter "A" which is found on the insert clasp as well as on the underside of the gold center lavalier section. I am calling this a lavalier style since it has the decorative panel with the cultured pearl and diamond drop in the center. I am not an expert on pearls but from what I could gather from my research, I think the above is true.
This vintage necklace features beautiful creamy white round cultured pearls along the neckline, each pearl measuring approximately 4-5mm and hand knotted in between. The 14kt filigree clasp connects the cultured pearls in the back and is marked as described above. They meet in the middle with a 2 inch section of 14kt gold studded with about 12 tiny white diamonds. The design of this central area reminds me of angels wings. The beautiful cultured pearl drop has a halo of larger sized white diamonds, again about 12 in total. This central cultured pearl is larger than the others and measures approximately 6-7mm. The surrounding diamonds and the other smaller diamonds that line the wings measure approximately 2 -3mm each. My guestimate for total diamond weight is about 1/2 of a carat. This necklace measures about 17 inches in length as you can see in the picture with the measure.
I think this is one of the loveliest vintage pearl necklaces I've seen in quite awhile. I think of debutantes, blushing brides, girls at the prom, wedding gowns, dressing up for a special event, etc when I look at this necklace. It is definitely a special necklace. This necklace was part of the same wonderful jewelry box I referenced in the recent ruby diamond stud listing. I can only imagine all the wonderful events this necklace has been a part of over the last 6 decades.
Please let me know if you have any questions. Also, if you have any information on the makers mark discussed above, I would be happy to have you share your knowledge. Thank you.
