For sale is a beautiful antique reverse intaglio brooch featuring an equestrian scene, a side portrait of a beautiful chestnut colored horse. This 14kt yellow gold pin is in very good condition. The crystal and horse are in great condition. The gold metal has wonderful detail that depict a stirrup on each end and tiny little wonderfully detailed buckles on either side of the crystal.
The length is a little over 2 inches at 2-1/8" and the height in the middle is a little over 1/2 inch at 5/8". The mark for 14kt is located on the pin catch which is a simple c-clasp which is common during the era, late 1860-1900.
Reverse intaglio, which this is, are often referred to as Essex crystals. Technically, they are not Essex crystals, which are paintings not carvings. Reverse intaglios are just as precious and feature a crystal that is carved out on the underside and then painted creating a 3 dimensional quality to the subject. Favorite subject matter would include dogs, cats and equestrian scenes and horses. Equestrian subjects are highly collectible.
