For sale is an exquisite little pin featuring two citrine hearts and a Scottish thistle design set in 9 carat yellow gold. This little treasure, which I believe is originally a Scottish piece, is known as a Luckenbooth or Lovers pin. There are two heart shaped citrine stones in a very pale color which was very popular during the late Victorian and early Edwardian era. They are beautifully prong set and in very nice condition. Each heart lays on another larger heart shape plaque which is dotted in little gold beads all along the outside. The beads are in good shape with one of the beads worn at the point of one heart.

In the center that gathers the hearts together, is a sweet Scottish thistle, one large flower in the center and two smaller ones each cascading over the top of each heart. The thistle has one leaf to the side.

This handmade pin has some etching or decoration on the gold which has become very faint over the years. The gold is in good shape with some light wear overall.

You will find the mark for 9ct on the back in the center cartouche. The pin mechanism is a C clasp with a partial closure mechanism. It is in good working condition.

Measurements are about 1.5 inches widest point by about 1 inch high diagonally. It weighs 4.6 grams.

The Luckenbooth pin came about during the 16th century when markets in Edinburough, Scotland were established all along the Main Street. They were open markets locked together (locking booth - Luckenbooth). Little pins in the shape of hearts, sometimes with crowns or thistle, would be sold to new mothers for good luck. Into the 1800's, the Luckenbooth became something that sweethearts would give to eachother and even royalty like Mary Queen of Scotts was known to give Luckenbooth pins. What a sweet and romantic tradition. This would be a lovely thing to give a new mother or a sweetheart. I believe this piece was made between 1880 and 1910. These pins are very hard to come by and are extremely collectible.
