Nancy Drew first appeared as a character who had a penchant for solving mysteries and getting herself out of precarious situations in 1930. Since that time, there have been more than 600 Nancy Drew mysteries written. The books are written under the pen name Carolyn Keene, with Mildred Wirt Benson writing 23 out of the first 30 books that were published from 1930-1953, and Wirt-Benson writing the first seven books that were published, thus creating the character many of us have known and loved. Edward Stratemeyer, founder of Stratameyer Syndicate, hired Wirt-Benson as the ghostwriter for the Nancy Drew series. The Syndicate was a book-packaging company that would produce story outlines, research, hire writers, edit, and illustrate books, and then sell the finished product to a publishing company. Stratemeyer focused on books for young readers, realizing that children and teenagers were an untapped market in the late 1800s and early 1900s.
The Secret at Shadow Ranch was the Syndicate’s fifth Nancy Drew story written and published by Grossett & Dunlap in 1931. Its illustrations reflected the hair and clothing styles of the 1930s, so after World War II and the birth of the baby boom, the early Nancy Drew stories were republished with updated covers and illustrations to attract the many young children who were growing up with Elvis Presley, station wagons, and backyard barbecues in the suburbs.
This 7 ½” x 5” 1965 edition of the original Nancy Drew mystery was again published by Grossett & Dunlap, with a few revisions by a writer by the name of Grace Gote Even though this is a revision, printed 30 or so years later, it still bears the author’s name as Carolyn Keene. Grossett & Dunlap was notorious for not making it clear exactly when a book was printed, but it says on the back that Grossett & Dunlap published it, and there is a postal zone number of 10, which shows it was printed before the Zip Code came out later in the 1960s. The book’s cover graphics are still very crisp and bright. The book does have a few dings on the corners and the first couple of pages have slightly loosed from the binding, but are secure. There is no dust cover.
This would be a wonderful addition to your vintage book collection. Please contact us if you have any questions.
