What a fun piece of Americana! Before automation of the family farm, eggs used to be hand weighed and graded to separate them into cartons designating them small, medium, large and extra large – and this was done one egg at a time! The scale has red, blue, yellow, and green sections, each indicating a different size of egg and also how much a dozen eggs would weigh for each size of egg. On the face of the chart, it is marked Oakes Mfg. Co., Inc., Tipton, Ind. USA. The needle still moves very smoothly when an egg in placed on the cradle (the marble egg we put on it moved the needle all the way to the Ex Large side of the scale. The egg is not included in the sale). The piece shows evidence of once having been painted a bright red but now shows age-appropriate wear. Surprisingly, there isn’t a whole lot of rust on it. The base measures 6 ½” x 3 3/16” and the piece is 6” tall.
This would be a charming addition to your scale collection or to decorate a country kitchen. Please contact us if you have any questions.
