Patented in 1899, this wonderful little postage scale was probably designed for a lady’s desk. Standing only 3 1/8” tall and measuring 2 ¾” deep, it has a nice pressed pattern on the letter platform to add a decorative touch to a utilitarian piece. The scale weighs letters, merchandise, book, circulars, and magazines for domestic and foreign destinations, as long as the package doesn’t weigh over 18 oz. Too bad postal rates aren’t what they used to be – when this scale was made a letter sent domestically only required 2 cents postage! The front plate breaks down on the prices for the weight of each piece being mailed; it also shows that the patents are pending for this scale with three dates: June 2, 1896, March 29, 1898, Jan. 31, 1899. There is some corrosion and rust on the metal and general wear. I don’t know how accurate the scale is.
This would be a wonderful addition to your desk accessory collection or as an interesting decorative piece. Please contact us if you have any questions.
