In researching this interesting postal scale, we found that Triner must have been an aggressive scale manufacturing company. In 1904, they came out with many different sizes of scales, all of which were patented February 23 of that year. This desk top scale is the Liberty model, which would weigh mail up to two pounds. The celluloid postal chart has first class letter rates for local and other points on the left side; on the right side are rates for merchandise, printed material and newspapers. When this scale was new, is was in the tiger stripe design – it had a black background and copper was infused on it to make the strips. Even though all of the black paint is gone, somehow the stripes remain (even though the strips look a little too random to be called tiger stripes)! The scale is 6 3/8” tall x 6 ¾” x 4”. It does have some rust on it and the celluloid is fragile with one chipped spot on it. The arm still moves very easily on the scale; so it is still usable – except for the postal rates!
