This is such an interesting piece. Marked Germany on a flat metal tag on the bottom, it dates sometime before World War II, and I can see it sitting on a wooden kitchen cupboard with fruit or vegetables from the garden resting in it. But, what makes it interesting, besides the looped wire design, is that the edges collapse into a flat tray or drying rack. When the sides are up in a basket, the mouth measures 10 ½” in diameter; when folded down flat, it measures 12 ½” in diameter. The basket is in very good condition; at one time I feel sure that was a silvery paint on the wires, but most of that has worn off and the wires are a bit rough with a tiny bit of corrosion.
