Antique Ladies’ Spittoon by East Palestine Pottery Company

Started in 1890, the East Palestine Pottery Company was located in East Palestine, Ohio where it operated independently for over a decade before it was purchased by fellow area potter W.S. George in the early 1900's. With its slim window of production, East Palestine Pottery Company (also known as E.P.P. CO.) pieces are rare finds. The factory burned down under W.S. George's management in 1912, and although W.S. George was using both E.P.P. CO's production facility and dish patterns and shapes upon acquisition, W.S. George marked all pieces with their own stamp beginning in 1904.

This antique pottery ladies’ spittoon is marked Vashti E.P.P. CO., which was made by the East Palestine Pottery Company. It is 4” tall and is approximately 5 ¼” from the handle to the widest point on the body of the spittoon. The brown staining around the top indicates it was used. There is gold on the handle and foot. There is crazing that can be seen in the photos and a large old chip on the rim that has been darkened over the many years of use. This just adds to the character of the piece. Considering the spittoon is over one hundred years old, it is in good condition.

This would be an interesting addition to your stoneware or primitive collection.
