This wooden mortar and pestle bears the marks that it was used regularly either in a pharmacy grinding powders or in a kitchen to grind herbs. Probably made of maple, the wood on the mortar has a dark grain that appears to be a spot or blemish, but it can be seen on the inside as well as the bottom, indicating that it runs through the wood. The 3 7/8” tall mortar and 4 ¾” long pestle both show signs of use: the bottom of the mortar has been rubbed smooth; the end of the pestle is worn, and there is a worn circle around the handle where it hit the sides of the mortar while being used. The handle has a nice patina. There is an age, drying crack on the foot of the mortar as well as other age and use related wear on each piece.
