According to a 1950s promotional piece, Sifo Toys, headquartered in St. Paul, Minnesota, was the world’s largest manufacturer of educational toys. Founded in 1944, the company consulted with child psychologists, educators, and parents to create toys that were fun, safe, durable and educational. Many of the toys were made out of maple, then sanded smooth and painted with non-toxic paint – they were certainly ahead of their time with their knowledge of safety issues as well as the psychology behind all of their “learning toys.” Sadly, plastics probably began to encroach on the toy manufacturing industry, and Sifo Toys went out of business in 1975.

This particular Ten Little Sifo Indians counting toy was featured in a 1956 Sifo catalog, which described it as made from maple and coming in six different colors. Included in the original packaging was the sheet music to Ten Little Indians so that the child could learn the song while striking each color block to flip it over to show the numbers 1 through 10. Unfortunately, we don’t have the sheet music, but it is evident that this piece was well loved and played with; there are marks across both sides of each block, marking where the block hit as it was flipped to the other side. Each block is colorful so that the child could also learn colors while learning to count and spell the numbers 1 through 10. On the back of the toy is written the name Anne Anderson, the little girl who must have had hours of fun playing and learning with this cute toy. The toy is 12 ¼” long, 3 ½” deep and 3 ¼” tall.

This would be a cute addition to your toy or 1950s collection. Please contact us if you have any questions.
