If only this charming little elephant could talk. I feel sure he’s from the 1920s; so, he’s seen a lot! The loss of paint over the papier mache attests that he was well-loved and played with. The elephant is 4 ¾” to the top of his headdress and is 4 ½” from front to back. His tail is a heavy gauge wire, and apparently he is dressed in a diaper with two big painted-on pins; his name is Babe. In one spot, the papier mache is missing, revealing what looks like wood underneath; so I suppose the toy was carved and then decorated with a thin layer of the paper, then painted and varnished. One side of his barbell is missing that he is holding in his trunk, but that, with the paint loss, just add to the charm and character of this lovely old piece.
This would be a darling addition to your antique toy collection or to use as a decoration. Please contact us if you have any questions.
